About

Close

Hanna Pallot sees her work as an artistic journey aiming to link image, writing and dance. After studying Space Design, her fascination with photography led her to do a multidisciplinary master's degree in Art. She then developed an artistic practice at the crossroads of staging, image and gesture. Dance plays an important role in her work. She thinks the body as a central point of the questions she develops around identities, femininities and nudity. At the same time, she is involved in feminism and keep writing about her daily experiences that she simultaneously photographs. Her arrival in Brussels in 2019 to work with 254Forest and VICE Belgium marks her first steps in the Belgian artistic and journalistic scene. In 2020, she directed her first short film A·ux Nu·es and started working for Behind The Blinds and Shadowplay magazines.

Dressing and undressing allows us to jump across identities, Subbacultcha, May 2021

In my opinion, Photography is part of the willingness to make visible what remains hidden. It has the ability to seize the blur that is inside of each of us, endlessly flowing between us all. At the same time, the photographic lens seems to be the only one able to achieve an optimal definition of what our eyes cannot make clearer. While "parasitic images" keep piling up over and over in our society, the photographic image will never stop revealing. The image is a medium of multiple possibilities, a source from which we must draw in order to expand and surprise our perceptions of the world. In this sense, it has the power of renewing visions that remain stifled by so-called objective dictates. We want to believe in the image, despite the trickery it is capable of, because, as Rolland Barthes says, “it still owes to say its truth”. The Image’s duty is to reveal, to educate, to raise awareness through the underlying beauty of what it freezes. While photographing, filming, clothed or naked, mobile or inert bodies, I attempt to make us feel a tiny part of these fleeting essences.

I realized quite late the extent of this field; the emotional states of being it can express, the words it can give to gestures, and, above all, the human vulnerability revealed behind the idealized image of dancers. Since then, I’ve been caught between the search for an ideal dancing body, and the desire of letting go through breathless gestures. Since then, I keep trying to stage the bodies of others, to create a body group by composing with balances, flexibilities and corporal limits. Bodies become statues in photo studios, as movements are frozen by a strange sharpness, while only a fleeting blur is sometimes seized. This way, I keep staging a personal research, as well as professional collaborations with various artists and dancers. It is under the influence of Maguy Marin staging the fragility of "malhabilitated bodies that still stand upright", Ohad Naharin researching a dance for all, and the visual and corporal composition of Damien Jalet, that I explore praise and vulnerability, stillness and mobility, singularity and collectivity, meticulously and spontaneity... Furthermore, the possibilities of multiple bodies, dances and images.

A strong link has been forged between images, staging and texts in my work. A few words, a link, between languages, visuals, gestures and sounds. It is with the same curiosity of identities and vulnerabilities, that I keep photographing, choreographing and writing, in an attempt to express what I barely can say. While operating in an autonomous way, the text can also dialogue with other artistic mediums and allows to explore multiple forms of writing; by confronting the text with reading and performed dance, by composing it as a dance choreography, by questioning the possibilities of written and pictorial narration. It is through this dynamic crossover that I continue to develop a writing that circulates between philosophical thesis, autobiographical narratives and hybrid forms of a "danced" text.
